A Victory for Freedom or a huge collective sigh of relief from the coalition leadership triumverate? I’ve noticed the few blogs that I scan have all made mention of the show trial verdict to hang Saddam Hussein. ‘What the hell’, I thought, ‘I’ll wade in too!’

Foregone conclusion, pre-determined outcome, kangaroo court, show trial, flexing of wings for a fledgling democracy and probably the most inane comment I’ve read from the media, vindication for the American led invasion of Iraq. Oh please…..someone get me a bucket and a cleaning woman. I’m gonna throw up!

Personally, I don’t think it matters whether Saddam swings from the end of a rope or suffers a sudden and massive overdose of lead. From the moment America invaded in March 2003, his life-span was always going to be dramatically shortened. Only the amount and the means of the shortening remained unknown. Is his death justified? As a staunch believer in the ‘eye-for-an-eye’ ethos, I say a vehement YES. As a purveyor of death and torture to the common citizenry of Iraq over decades, this so-called verdict from an equally so-called newly democratic judicial process is justified, even if only as a means of extracting vengeance. Revenge, as any good Trekker knows, is a dish best served cold. I seriously doubt Iraqis, in the main, will view the verdict with coldly unemotive detachment. After all, if winning isn’t important why bother keeping score?

While we’re on the subject of classic quotes, I came across this one which would appear to have relevance to the Iraq situation from an American political perspective.

“Destroying an empire to win a war is no victory, and ending a battle to save an empire is no defeat.”

See??!!! Everything you need to know about life, you can get from Star Trek
