It’s come to my attention, through membership of a discussion forum on a wide range of topics, that a dedicated cadre of conservatism still exists despite the rejection of that ideology across the globe.

The lever conservatism uses these days is the GFC. Global Financial Crisis. It’s all the fault of liberalism, ‘leftism’ in fact, any form of ideology which doesn’t conform to hard right-wing conservatism. Go back five years and conservatism was king because it ruled governments across the globe. After all, human beings are essentially followers and conservative in nature. Change is always suspect and new ideas always viewed from a jaundiced perspective. Conservatism decreed that Islam was at the root of global ructions because the airplanes which flew into the Twin Towers were apparently piloted by Muslims. That those Muslims might have had grievances against westernisation of what they saw as their beliefs was never considered. They did what they did and may the christian god damn them for all time.

We saw conservatism, back to the hilt an illegal invasion of a sovereign nation on the pretext of regime change "for the benefit of the Iraqis". In this country, we saw human beings shut away behind razor wire for daring to want something better in their lives and risking those lives to find it. Ironically, a huge majority of those individuals have since found that life in Australia, and become citizens. That’s change at work. Nothing to be afraid of, only change.

Now it seems, in the United States of America, there remains a dedicated undercurrent determined to undermine the Obama administration with utterances like this one. Clearly such writings are opportunistic and ill-informed, but dangerously so because they ignore the realities of what made the GFC and what keeps it running. Political ideology has nothing whatsoever to do with the issue. Claims like the following:

"Until they realize that their agenda is destroying the life savings of millions of Americans, then all I can give you is caution… I’m not saying Mr. President go stare at the Bloomberg quote machine and come to your senses. I just want some sign that Obama realizes the market is totally falling apart and that his agenda has a big hand in that happening. I don’t know about you but I felt it everywhere I went this weekend… A young kid took me aside. He said I was right when I said we’ve elected a Leninist… I felt the total lack of control we all feel right now, the, "It’s out of my hands but where’s the authority?" The, "Hey it’s amateur hour at our darkest moment."

Exclamations such as "Obama has already cost America more than the 9-11 attacks." are nothing more than attention-seeking, shock-jock hyperbole, but I for one find it disturbing that in it’s time of greatest need, America is being deliberately undermined by dedicated sections of her own society, vowed and declared on bringing down the one hope she has right now. A government ideologically the opposite of that which drew America into the financial whirlpool she finds herself in today.

  1. I only managed a couple of paras. of that link – who gives a flying “what the Market thinks..” since it was the Market that created this nonesense.
Although ethically opposed to all the noxious nostrums which the new Right trundled out in that excrescence of a decade the 80s under the ThatcheRaygun, already in early onset Alzheimers, it was always open to propose that “if you think it’s such a great idea, go for it – without tax breaks, subsidies, tariffs, political donations and special frendz rates etc ad nauseam”
And then, when it inevitablky came crashing down due to systemic, intrinsic contradictions, take your bruises and shut up about bail-outs.
The RWDBs for some months have been pushing FDR created & prolonged the Depression with the New Deal (just this afternoon on Dingbats R Us, aka Counterpoint, those undead children of thatcher , Duffy & ComreyThompson were promulgating this drivel).
The Right are always so keen to deny reality until it bites them on the bum and then they scream for the help they have always denied the truly needy.
