What is it with The Australian, and this rather fatuous column?
I’ve had a look at this "cut and Paste" thing a couple of times now when it crops up on the RSS alert. I can’t for the life of me understand the purpose of taking random pieces of banal journalism & sticking them all together in one column on the pretext of a somewhat spurious word association between them. What is the connection between something Geraldine Doogue might have said during her interview with Thomas Mann – which I listened to by the way – and the oblique, obtuse reference to the Fawlty Towers episode entitled "The Germans"? Is there meant to be something funny in the connection? Perhaps it’s simply another way for The Oz on the so-called ‘right’ of sniping at the ABC on the so-called ‘left’. Who knows, but responsible, edifying journalism it isn’t.
